Carl and Ellie’s life together first began as children, where they bonded over their idol Charles F. Muntz. Ellie confides in Carl her desire to move her “clubhouse” – an abandoned neighbourhood house – to a cliff overlooking Paradise Falls. The two later marry and live in the restored house. Though they never made it to Paradise Falls before Ellie passed away from illness, Carl resolved to keep his promise to her and move their home to that very place.
